Q & A | BlackBerry Co-Founder on legacy, innovation, and Canadian entrepreneurship

Mike Lazaridis, BlackBerry Co-Founder and the 2016 winner of the Adam Chowaniec Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Wolf Blass Wines has a long-lasting legacy spanning decades. He’s a telecommunications pioneer who invented the smartphone as we know it, built Canada’s largest tech company and lead the global telecom market. Read our conversation on legacy, motivations and the next generation with the father of the modern-day smartphone. Q: Mike, what do you believe has been your greatest legacy? I don’t really think about legacies or things of that nature. That said, I am very proud of what we were able to achieve with BlackBerry. We basically invented the smartphone and created a new global industry. Also, at its largest, RIM (now BlackBerry) was Canada’s largest tech company, a pioneer, innovator and leader in the global telecommunications market. Q: That’s a paramount achievement, Mike. What motivated you to enter the world of telecommunications and technology? I am a big believer in the power of science as a means of advancing society and creating jobs and value creation. I also believe that if you bring together brilliant minds to collaborate on a specific area of focus, you can create transformative technologies that in […]

Q & A | The Story of a Prairie Legend

Randy Yatscoff, the Prairies Region Winner of the 2016 Adam Chowaniec Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Wolf Blass Wines, is an entrepreneur, community builder, and a mentor, who has truly impacted the lives of those around him. As the CEO of a drug development company, Randy led the company to raise $200 million in equity financing and took the company public. Read our conversation below. Q: What’s the driving force behind all your achievements? I like to see a project finish. (I like) seeing innovation from a concept and as it moves forward to become reality. Q: Is that also your greatest legacy? If not, what is? [My greatest legacy is] seeing people who I mentored move forward and be successful in their careers. Q: Randy, what has been your single biggest lifelong lesson? To listen and be patient. That’s the biggest one; when you’re young, you’re more impulsive. Listen and be patient. Things will come if you have your vision. (Also,) take a risk. Take big risks. I gave up a guaranteed position until I’m 65 while I was in my early 40’s. I changed my whole career path. Q: Was it worth it? Absolutely. People would say “you’re […]

A Q & A with John Zubak, 2016 BC and the North Region Adam Chowaniec Lifetime Achievement Award winner

John Zubak is a leading inspiration and entrepreneur on Canada’s West Coast. He’s also the 2016 BC and the North Adam Chowaniec Lifetime Achievement Award winner, presented by Wolf Blass Wines. He plays an instrumental role in building sustainable relationships between local businesses and the Thompson Rivers University of Business and Economics. John is also an Entrepreneur in Residence at Kamloops Innovation and is known for his role in the Business Kickstart 101 project, which engages over 100 community business leaders with students in mentorship format. Read our conversation below. Q: What drives you as an entrepreneur? It’s going to sound a little bit funny. I’m driven by problems and finding solutions. I don’t do well when everything is moving along at normal and status quo. I love having my brain working at night, and I love when it causes me to jump out of bed because I think I’ve found, maybe, a little workaround to something. I love trying to find creative ways – especially if it looks like it’s something where people will say “no, you can’t do it” or “this is the only way it will work.”   Q: You work with youth. What advice would you […]

Q & A | The legacy of an innovation architect in Atlantic Canada

Dr. John McLaughlin is at the forefront of building Atlantic Canada into an entrepreneurial and innovative region. Read our conversation with the Atlantic Region winner of the 2016 Adam Chowaniec Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Wolf Blass Wines, below. Q: John, what’s the driving factor for all the work you do? I’m from New Brunswick, I have deep roots here… I guess it’s just a pretty deep commitment to try and see my province do better, go further, and to strengthen the quality of life for my people. It’s always been at the heart of my agenda to contribute where I came from. It’s a purposeful life; believing in a cause and constantly striving to make a difference. Q: What do you believe has been your greatest legacy? My children and my grandchildren. (But) in the context of this award, it’s contributing to trying to strengthen the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in our province. Q: You’ve played a big […]

Andy Nulman, Co-Founder of the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, is Quebec’s funny-man, entrepreneur extraordinaire, and the 2016 Québec Region winner of the Adam Chowaniec Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Wolf Blass Wines. Young in spirit and snappy in dress, Andy Nulman has been creating and leading major media projects for four decades. Currently, he’s Co-Founder and CEO of Play The Future Inc., a forward-thinking digital platform/brand engagement tool that converts the big data points and events of major brands into consumer engagement and entertainment; a natural progression for a serial entrepreneur who believes that “Life’s A Game!” In addition, in a part-time role as “Chief Attention Getter” of 375 MTL, he’s responsible for audacious, head-turning projects to set the stage for Montreal’s spirit-renewing 375 Anniversary celebrations in 2017. Read our conversation on starting up, entrepreneurship, and the future of business with Quebec’s comedy king. Q: What was your ‘ah-ha!’ moment in becoming an entrepreneur? I was a very happy man until I got in a fight with a man who was going to become my boss. I didn’t know that. He cut my tie at a function I put together as promotion manager at the newspaper….. He said on […]
