Q & A with Quayce Thomas, co-founder and CEO of Timsle

As we celebrated the movers and shakers of Canada’s entrepreneurship movement with the Startup Canada Awards this fall, we also celebrated the triumphs of every entrepreneur with Wolf Blass Wines. Through national social media contests that highlighted the meaning of triumph in the entrepreneurial context, one Canadian entrepreneur was selected for a mentorship lunch with Michael Hyatt, Executive Chairman at BlueCat Networks, investor, and Dragon on CBC’s Next Gen Den – Dragon’s Den. Quayce Thomas, Co-Founder and CEO of Timsle, boarded ViaRail on Dec. 1 to meet with Michael, and to network with winners of the 2015 national Startup Canada Awards at the CN Tower.   Startup Canada spoke with Quayce just before his meeting. Startup Canada: What is Timsle?   Quayce Thomas: Timsle is an accountability network designed to keep you motivated towards your daily goals.   Startup Canada: What’s behind the name?    Quayce Thomas: When I was first diagnosed with bipolar disorder, I started missing a lot of my soccer games. My friend Josh noticed, and told me that if I ever needed to talk, he was here. One night, while I was having a bad episode of depression, I called him, and he came back from work and took […]

Q & A with the Right Honourable Paul Martin, founder of the Capital for Aboriginal Prosperity and Entrepreneurship Fund

The Right Honourable Paul Martin is the founder of the Martin Aboriginal Education Initiative (MAEI), which focusses on elementary and secondary education for Aboriginal students, and the Capital for Aboriginal Prosperity and Entrepreneurship (CAPE) Fund, an investment fund investing in Aboriginal business. In partnership with recognized Aboriginal educators, MAEI developed a nationally accredited program called the Aboriginal Youth Entrepreneurship Program (AYEP). AYEP teaches Aboriginal youth about business and entrepreneurship, in order to help prepare them to engage in business activity with competence and confidence. By receiving Grade 11 and Grade 12 AYEP secondary school credits, the program moves students closer to high school completion and the opportunity to go on to post-secondary studies. The CAPE Fund is a $50 million private-sector investment fund initiated by 21 of Canada’s leading companies, individuals, and US-based foundations. CAPE’s management team focuses on mid-market opportunities with a strong degree of Aboriginal involvement and connection to Aboriginal communities throughout Canada. Through these partnerships, CAPE has demonstrated that entrepreneurship and mentorship can make a difference in the lives of this and future generations of Aboriginal Canadians. Startup Canada chatted with Mr. Martin by phone. Startup Canada: Why did you start the CAPE Fund? Right Honourable Paul Martin: Investment capital is the lifeblood of entrepreneurship but all too often, it can […]

Q&A with Lincoln Smith, Executive Director, Kamloops Innovation

SC: Are we truly in the era of the entrepreneur? LS: Yes! Entrepreneurship has never been more documented, discussed, and supported than it is today. This doesn’t make it less work to turn your idea into a successful startup, but there has never been a better time to try. Kamloops Innovation is bringing entrepreneur support to our region and helping to grow a culture and ecosystem around entrepreneurship. This is being done in cities across Canada, and startups are being founded and are prospering like never before. SC: How can we inspire Canadians through entrepreneurship? LS: Entrepreneurial thinking is woven into our everyday lives. We all have the opportunity to find solutions, meet challenges, evaluate the benefits and make things better. This entrepreneurial thinking leads to continual improvement for the betterment of Canada. A percentage of people will take a further step, and be inspired to make their solution into a business. How can we inspire Canadians? People need to see what’s possible, witness the successes, and to have access to resources that enable them to explore entrepreneurship in supported environments. We can continue to provide these resources and encourage Canadians to drop in and participate. By sharing success stories, Canadians […]
