Deirdre Horan, based in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, recognized the lack of prominent brands in the umbrella industry and the alarming issue of plastic pollution in our oceans.

Motivated to address both, she launched Dri in 2023. Dri produces umbrellas made from ocean-bound plastics sourced from fairly paid workers in nations most affected by such pollution.

With a dual mission of cleaning our oceans and providing durable, reliable umbrellas, Dri aims to make a positive impact on both environmental and consumer fronts. Horan is excited to grow her business and continue her efforts to combat plastic pollution while offering a necessary everyday product.

What makes your business unique?

Dri stands out in the umbrella industry by prioritizing durability and sustainability. While many umbrellas on the market are made from unreliable materials prone to bending or breaking, Dri umbrellas are crafted from sustainable materials in a more durable fashion.

What’s your hardest hurdle and were you able to overcome it?

My biggest challenge was receiving our first prototype after over a year of development, only to find out it wasn’t waterproof during a rainy walk with my husband.

Despite the setback, I remained resilient and determined to overcome obstacles, ultimately pushing forward with unwavering determination.

Were there any significant personal situations that negatively impacted your business decisions?

My deep commitment to environmental conservation and fighting climate change has greatly influenced my business decisions.

Protecting our oceans, which absorb the majority of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and combating plastic pollution, which harms wildlife and human health, are core values that drive Dri’s mission.

What can you say to other startup entrepreneurs?

Take the time to define your business vision and consider what you want your life to look like beyond your business endeavors. While financial success is crucial, maintaining a balanced life is paramount.

Remember that motivation may fluctuate, but even small actions like sending an email or jotting down a to-do list can keep progress moving forward.

What keeps you inspired even during your darkest days?

I surround myself with reminders of Dri’s journey and accomplishments in my home office. Items like newspaper articles featuring Dri, copies of order sheets from successful trade shows, or the first check received from wholesalers serve as tangible reminders of our progress.

Revisiting these milestones reignites my self-belief and empowers me to overcome obstacles with renewed determination.
