Robin Saidov, with over 20 years of experience in the utilities industry, found the process of getting quotes for solar panels confusing and opaque. After moving three times and receiving more than 30 unclear solar panel quotes, Saidov recognized a widespread problem faced by countless homeowners.

To address this, she launched Your Energy Footprint last year, an online course designed to educate homeowners about solar energy.

Based in Westport, Connecticut, Saidov’s business equips prospective solar panel buyers with the right questions to ask and the knowledge to break down quotes.

This empowers them to make informed decisions about whether solar panels are a sound investment. As Saidov emphasizes, “No one deserves to be ripped off.”

What makes your business unique?

Unlike many resources for buying solar panels, Your Energy Footprint is not a sales funnel for installers. Other platforms often present misleading return-on-investment calculations to make solar panels appear more beneficial than they are.

While solar can save money and benefit the environment, some installers prioritize their profits.

In the $36 billion residential solar industry, Your Energy Footprint stands out by genuinely helping homeowners make informed decisions.

What’s your hardest hurdle and were you able to overcome it?

Reaching the 2% of homeowners shopping for solar each year out of 82 million single-family homes in the U.S. is challenging. I’ve tackled this by creating a podcast that details easy, money-saving energy efficiency improvements.

The podcast is relevant, shareable, and relatable, familiarizing homeowners with my brand before they start shopping for solar panels.

Were there any significant personal situations that negatively impacted your business decisions?

I launched my company in the summer of 2023 and developed my product before starting any marketing efforts. This deliberate, methodical approach was necessary because I’m also caring for my 2-year-old daughter.

Keeping her home has allowed me to develop my company, and I plan to expand my efforts when she starts school in 2024.

What can you say to other startup entrepreneurs?

Start a podcast and promote it well. It’s an excellent way to engage and grow an audience.

What keeps you inspired even during your darkest days?

I find inspiration from my kids. When facing a creative block or tough point, I step away and spend time with them. This break refreshes me, allowing me to return to the problem with renewed energy and perspective.
